A volunteer translator story: Andrea Alvisi translated almost 15,000 words for non-profit organizations

In the realm of humanitarian and development work, translators and interpreters play a crucial role in ensuring that vital information reaches those in need, in languages they understand. This mission is made possible by a dedicated team of volunteer translators, among whom Andrea Alvisi stands out as a shining example.

Andrea’s journey began when he was selected as an official translator for Amnesty International Italy back in 2016. This experience ignited his belief in the importance of skilled linguists dedicating their time to meaningful causes. For Andrea, volunteering his translation and interpreting skills to NGOs and charities without the means to afford professional services is not just about professional development but also about personal fulfillment.

Andrea has translated nearly 15,000 words, contributing significantly to various projects for non-profit organizations. Despite his busy schedule, he finds time in the evenings or weekends to complete assignments, thanks to the manageable deadlines and his passion for the work.

Specializing in English to Italian translations, Andrea has worked on a range of texts, from technical reports on crisis management to letters for high-profile football charities. Each project presents its own challenges, keeping him engaged and continuously learning.

Through his work, Andrea has gained valuable insights into organizations like the Red Cross, leading him to pursue further volunteering opportunities in interpreting. One particular project made him deeply consider the challenges faced by disabled football fans due to inadequate stadium infrastructure, broadening his perspective and fueling his commitment to making a difference.

Andrea’s story exemplifies the impact that volunteer translators can have in bridging language barriers and supporting humanitarian causes. If you’re interested in joining or learning more about translators and interpreters’ work, we invite you to connect with us.

Empowering Through Language: The Inspiring Stories of Nadia Nadim and Marlee Matlin

In a world that’s increasingly interconnected, breaking down language barriers has become more important than ever. Language is not merely a means of communication; it’s a gateway to opportunities, understanding, and inclusivity.

Two remarkable individuals, Nadia Nadim and Marlee Matlin, have demonstrated how language and linguistics play a pivotal role in transcending barriers and opening doors for everyone. In this blog post, we’ll delve into the inspiring journeys of Nadia Nadim and Marlee Matlin, highlighting the significance of language in their lives and the broader context of breaking language barriers.

Nadia Nadim: From Refugee to Football Star and Doctor, who knows 11 languages!

Nadia Nadim’s life story is one of perseverance, determination, and the power of language. Born in Afghanistan, she and her family fled their war-torn homeland as refugees, eventually settling in Denmark. As a young girl, Nadia faced the challenge of adapting to a new culture and learning a new language. Despite these obstacles, she used language as a bridge to connect with her peers and her new community. Through her dedication to learning Danish, Nadia not only integrated herself but also excelled academically.

Language played a pivotal role in Nadia’s journey to becoming a professional football (soccer) player. As she honed her skills on the field, she developed a deep understanding of the sport’s language – the strategies, the terminology, and the teamwork required. This linguistic prowess enabled her to communicate effectively with teammates, coaches, and fans, ultimately leading to a successful career as a football star,  who knows 11 languages! 😮 Danish, English, German, French, Swedish, Norwegian, Persian, Dari, Urdu, Hindi, Arabic. Can you imagine?

But Nadia’s story doesn’t stop there. She pursued a medical degree, leveraging her language skills to study and excel in her courses. Today, she stands as a living testament to how language can transform lives, from bridging cultural gaps to achieving personal and professional goals.

Marlee Matlin: Giving Voice to the Deaf Community

Marlee Matlin’s journey has been a beacon of hope and advocacy for the deaf community. As the only deaf actor to have won an Academy Award for Best Actress, Matlin has shattered stereotypes and proved that linguistic barriers can be overcome, regardless of one’s abilities.

American Sign Language (ASL) became Marlee Matlin’s medium for communication and expression. ASL is a distinct language with its own grammar, vocabulary, and cultural nuances. Marlee’s mastery of ASL allowed her to navigate a world that often seemed deaf to the needs and experiences of the deaf community. Through her acting, she demonstrated the rich storytelling potential of sign language, captivating audiences without uttering a spoken word.

Matlin’s advocacy extends beyond the screen. She has been a vocal supporter of closed captioning and accessible media, ensuring that language barriers don’t hinder the enjoyment and participation of deaf individuals. Her efforts have highlighted the importance of linguistic inclusivity and the necessity of making information and opportunities available to all, regardless of their communication preferences.

The Broader Context: Breaking Language Barriers for All

The stories of Nadia Nadim and Marlee Matlin reflect a universal truth: language is a tool that can empower and uplift individuals from diverse backgrounds. Whether it’s through learning a new language to integrate into a new society, mastering the language of a passion or profession, or advocating for linguistic inclusivity, language plays a central role in creating a more equitable and connected world.

As Homeland Language Services, a reliable language provider, we understand the profound impact of language on individuals and communities. Our commitment to breaking language barriers aligns with the journeys of Nadia Nadim and Marlee Matlin. By providing translation, interpretation, and language access services, we contribute to fostering understanding, collaboration, and opportunity for everyone, regardless of linguistic background.

🚀May the Fourth be with You!

On May 4th, fans of the epic tales from a distant, magical galaxy come together to celebrate what has become known as Star Wars Day. This date was selected by fans as a day to honor the films and universe created by George Lucas, due to its connection with the iconic Star Wars catchphrase, “may the force be with you.”

We asked our team if somebody likes the Star Wars Universe.
Our Homeland Language Services Call Center Operations Supervisor Alejandro Olivero commented on this day in the calendar:
“I really love it because it is not only an action movie, it also involves politics and has a lot of depth in its history. It is a really rich universe.

I am a hardcore fan although I don’t get to the point of dressing up like Chewbacca. This doesn’t mean I wouldn’t look good in that suit.

I have seen these movies in several languages. I began with the original trilogy in Spanish, then the second trilogy I saw in English. All the rest have been either in German or English too. Except for The Clone Wars comics that were in Spanish also.

Unfortunately, I won’t make the movie night today, but as a sure thing I will see something from the catalog on the weekend.”

Whether or not you are familiar with the Star Wars franchise, there are fascinating elements to explore within its fictional world. Here we will delve into the intersection of languages and the Star Wars Universe.

Localizing Star Wars for a global audience presented numerous challenges, particularly regarding the use of fictional languages such as Aurebesh, Huttese, and Shyriiwook. These languages were created specifically for the Star Wars universe, and their usage required close collaboration between linguists and filmmakers to ensure that the dialogue made sense when translated into other languages. For instance, in the German version of the films, the term “Force” was translated as “Macht,” which means “power” or “strength,” to reflect the concept of the mystical energy that can be harnessed by Jedi Knights.

Adapting cultural references and humor was also a crucial aspect of localizing Star Wars. The films are rife with American pop culture references and humor that may not translate well across different countries. For instance, in the French version of the film, the character of Han Solo was portrayed as more cynical and sarcastic, reflecting the French cultural stereotype of a rebel. In contrast, the Japanese version of the films emphasized the Jedi’s honor and duty, which aligns with a central value in Japanese culture.

Localizing the Star Wars films for different audiences also required adapting some of the visual elements. In the Chinese version, for example, Darth Vader’s appearance was modified to resemble a traditional Chinese warrior. This was an attempt to make the character more relatable to Chinese audiences and emphasize his intimidating presence.

The localization process for Star Wars was a complex and challenging task that necessitated careful attention to cultural differences and subtleties. The translators, linguists, and filmmakers involved had to strike a balance between accuracy and faithfulness to the original films and making the movies relatable and accessible to audiences from various regions and cultures. Despite these obstacles, the Star Wars franchise has enjoyed worldwide success and continues to enthrall audiences across the globe. And that’s also a reason why we, as a language services provider, are fond of Star Wars Universe. We see this enormous work of translators, and interpreters and we are proud that we serve the world languages as well.

By the way, since its premiere in 1977, the Star Wars films have been translated (and localized!) into over 50 languages.

Witness the earthquake in Turkey: how to live next to the disaster

On the day of the earthquake on February 6, 2023, a catastrophic natural disaster struck Turkey, leaving thousands of people injured, homeless, and grieving. But the impact was felt far beyond the areas of the country that were directly affected by the physical destruction. For many people, the trauma of the earthquake was deeply felt, whether it was through the emotional toll of witnessing the devastation, or the physical toll of living in temporary shelters or dealing with disrupted services.

It’s difficult to overstate the magnitude of this experience, which left its mark on individuals and communities across the country. Whether felt morally or physically, the earthquake had a profound impact on the lives of many people, and the healing process will take time and perseverance.

Among those affected was our language partner Ashraf, who lives with his family in the eastern part of Turkey. We’ve been eagerly waiting to speak with him to gain a better understanding of the impact the event had on the country.

Despite the overwhelming challenges, the people of Turkey have shown remarkable resilience and solidarity in the aftermath of the earthquake. Through their words, we hope to learn more about the impact of this disaster on the local community, and the ways in which we, as language services providers, can continue to support and stand in solidarity with the people of Turkey. So, let’s dive into the interview directly with our language partner about their experience of this life-changing event:

Homeland Language Services: Where were you and your family on Monday, February 6 when the earthquake happened?

Ashraf: We were at home sleeping when the earthquake happened around 4:15 am.

Homeland Language Services: Have you known about the evidence of earthquakes before? Are there any special alerts?

Ashraf: No, there were no prior alerts.

Homeland Language Services: What support are you receiving these days?

Ashraf: The government has been very supportive of the affected people, providing shelter as much as possible and necessities such as food, clothes, water, and healthcare. The government will also start giving a small amount of allowance to these families. The long-term plan is to rebuild the houses as quickly as possible.

Homeland Language Services: How are you handling your work duties these days?

Ashraf: Since all my work is mainly remote, the loss of electricity and internet didn’t affect me much, although my concentration was affected. My team steps in to cover for me during these times.

Homeland Language Services: You are a language services provider, did you notice any changes in requests? Is there an increase in the need for interpretation services?

Ashraf: Yes, there is an increase in requests for certain languages because rescue teams with different nationalities have stepped in, which causes a language barrier between foreign doctors and the affected people.

Homeland Language Services: In your opinion, how can language services be useful in such situations?

Ashraf: Most of our support as a language services provider comes from the medical field since thousands of people were injured. Many doctors, nurses, and health practitioners came to support from all over the world. Interpreting between the victims and the health practitioners is a must to better diagnose the victims. On the other hand, the areas that were most damaged are occupied by two major nationalities, Syrians and Turks, who speak two different languages. Assistance is really needed to interpret and translate between the two languages, Arabic and Turkish to English.

We highly appreciate Ashraf’s time and the possibility to talk with us about the situation in Turkey. We empathize with the challenges that the earthquake has brought upon the community. As a language services provider, we can offer our support to ensure that communication barriers are overcome and that the affected people receive the help they need in their native language. Our Homeland Language Services team of professional interpreters and translators can provide fast and accurate language services to aid in the recovery and rebuilding process. We stand with Turkish and Syrian victims of the earthquake during these difficult times. If you want to help Turkish abd Syrian victims, find here some aid resources.

Technology Enhances Affordable Interpretation Solutions

Many companies and interpretation firms are actively developing in order to meet new demands of interpretation. Nowadays thanks to modern technology, remote and video interpretation services are available worldwide. Mobile devices and smartphones became more convenient with the internet connection and now are available for affordable interpretation solutions for anybody.

Video technology has not only improved healthcare but many other industries as well. The use of technology has provided the much-needed benefit and reduction in operating costs while at the same time, not affecting the service delivery.

How technology positively affects the interpretation process?

Why Video Technology is Essential

Many settings and industries should put in use Video technology to get affordable interpretation services. It reduces the risks of coronavirus infection, costs, travel fatigue, and accommodation for interpreters and speakers. Devices, internet connection, and interpretation services become more accessible for any budget.  Moreover, during video remote interpretation specialists are only paid for the minutes worked, that makes sense to pay only for the time of service you really got.

High-Definition Video and Audio

Video and audio are vital for providing remote interpretation services. The media channels are constantly developing, so audio and video continue to advance in HD. Remote interpretation services rely upon HD quality of video and audio to deliver information accurately.

When some words may sound similar, the interpreter will note the difference through HD. In addition, the specialist can pick up all the signs and nuances of languages and understand them. Glances, inflections, eye movements, and moods are contributed to the interpretation process and make the information complete.

Applications

Smart devices use apps to carry out various purposes. As new mobile devices and smartphones come up on the market every year, language apps help to offer affordable interpretation solutions. Apps can carry out more duties than converting the languages and texts. The apps can be integrated with AI media to increase interpretation efficiency and make the process smoother for all parties in the conversation.

Artificial intelligence software is made to mirror the human element in interpretation.it can help to find the best meaning for a word or phrase or, for example, search for a culturally suitable equivalent in the native language of a limited-English speaking person. Applications provide different levels of settings for any specialization needed. For a non-specialist audience, the app can offer interpretations in an easy way to understand.

Video Conferences

Modern video technology made online interpretation possible. Conference rooms and video conferences provide the connection platform with smart devices for individuals. Usually, video conferences involve screen’s demonstrating and video of speakers, so the audience can see and hear everything the interpreter is conferring.

Video conference technology provides a means of communication with people from different rooms, locations, or even parts of the world. When high-quality cameras and monitors, HD perfect microphones are used together, interpretation becomes super easy.

VRI solutions are more likely to reduce the need for an in-house interpreter and, at the same time, deliver the intended information.
