Women at Homeland Language Services: “We are building harmonious Work-life balance”

International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on March 8th to recognize the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women and to advocate for gender equality around the world.

It’s important to recognize and honor the incredible contributions that women make every day. Whether it’s in the workplace, at home, or in their communities, women continue to break down barriers and pave the way for a more equitable world.

In our company, Homeland Language Services, we’re fortunate to have a talented and diverse team of women who bring their unique perspectives, skills, and experiences to the table. Today, we want to take a moment to acknowledge and appreciate their hard work, dedication, and achievements. We believe that when we empower women, we all benefit, and we’re committed to creating a workplace where everyone can thrive.

At Homeland Language Services, recognition of women is not just a talking point, it’s a lived reality. From the highest levels of management to the ranks of interpreters and translators, women play a vital role in every aspect of the company’s operations. One of the keys to Homeland Language Services’ success is its commitment to equal opportunities for all team members, regardless of gender. This commitment is reflected in the fact that women occupy a variety of roles across the company, including managers, team leads, financial analysts, HR team members, and accountants.

But it’s not just about having women in leadership positions. The company also recognizes the importance of work-life balance and building family relationships within the team. This means that women on the team have the freedom and flexibility to pursue their own interests outside of work, whether that’s spending time with family, pursuing hobbies, or taking time for self-care. This approach has created a workplace culture that is both welcoming and supportive, where women can feel safe and happy. And with almost half of the company’s team of interpreters and translators being women, it’s clear that this commitment to gender equality is having a real impact at every level of the organization.

Thanks to this culture of recognition, support, and equality, Homeland Language Services is not only a great place to work for women but for all team members who value family, balance, and personal growth.

Witness the earthquake in Turkey: how to live next to the disaster

On the day of the earthquake on February 6, 2023, a catastrophic natural disaster struck Turkey, leaving thousands of people injured, homeless, and grieving. But the impact was felt far beyond the areas of the country that were directly affected by the physical destruction. For many people, the trauma of the earthquake was deeply felt, whether it was through the emotional toll of witnessing the devastation, or the physical toll of living in temporary shelters or dealing with disrupted services.

It’s difficult to overstate the magnitude of this experience, which left its mark on individuals and communities across the country. Whether felt morally or physically, the earthquake had a profound impact on the lives of many people, and the healing process will take time and perseverance.

Among those affected was our language partner Ashraf, who lives with his family in the eastern part of Turkey. We’ve been eagerly waiting to speak with him to gain a better understanding of the impact the event had on the country.

Despite the overwhelming challenges, the people of Turkey have shown remarkable resilience and solidarity in the aftermath of the earthquake. Through their words, we hope to learn more about the impact of this disaster on the local community, and the ways in which we, as language services providers, can continue to support and stand in solidarity with the people of Turkey. So, let’s dive into the interview directly with our language partner about their experience of this life-changing event:

Homeland Language Services: Where were you and your family on Monday, February 6 when the earthquake happened?

Ashraf: We were at home sleeping when the earthquake happened around 4:15 am.

Homeland Language Services: Have you known about the evidence of earthquakes before? Are there any special alerts?

Ashraf: No, there were no prior alerts.

Homeland Language Services: What support are you receiving these days?

Ashraf: The government has been very supportive of the affected people, providing shelter as much as possible and necessities such as food, clothes, water, and healthcare. The government will also start giving a small amount of allowance to these families. The long-term plan is to rebuild the houses as quickly as possible.

Homeland Language Services: How are you handling your work duties these days?

Ashraf: Since all my work is mainly remote, the loss of electricity and internet didn’t affect me much, although my concentration was affected. My team steps in to cover for me during these times.

Homeland Language Services: You are a language services provider, did you notice any changes in requests? Is there an increase in the need for interpretation services?

Ashraf: Yes, there is an increase in requests for certain languages because rescue teams with different nationalities have stepped in, which causes a language barrier between foreign doctors and the affected people.

Homeland Language Services: In your opinion, how can language services be useful in such situations?

Ashraf: Most of our support as a language services provider comes from the medical field since thousands of people were injured. Many doctors, nurses, and health practitioners came to support from all over the world. Interpreting between the victims and the health practitioners is a must to better diagnose the victims. On the other hand, the areas that were most damaged are occupied by two major nationalities, Syrians and Turks, who speak two different languages. Assistance is really needed to interpret and translate between the two languages, Arabic and Turkish to English.

We highly appreciate Ashraf’s time and the possibility to talk with us about the situation in Turkey. We empathize with the challenges that the earthquake has brought upon the community. As a language services provider, we can offer our support to ensure that communication barriers are overcome and that the affected people receive the help they need in their native language. Our Homeland Language Services team of professional interpreters and translators can provide fast and accurate language services to aid in the recovery and rebuilding process. We stand with Turkish and Syrian victims of the earthquake during these difficult times. If you want to help Turkish abd Syrian victims, find here some aid resources.

Happy International Mother Language Day!

Today, we celebrate the unique and diverse languages that make up our world. At Homeland Language Services, we recognize the importance of preserving and promoting these languages through our interpretation & translation services.

Did you know that there are over 7,000 languages spoken in the world today? Sadly, it is also estimated that one language dies every two weeks, which means that many of these languages are at risk of disappearing forever.

Moreover, here are some interesting facts about languages on our planet:

  1. 1. There are more than 7,000 languages spoken in the world today, but around 40% of the global population only speaks one language.
  2. 2. According to the United Nations, there are more than 200 languages that have fewer than 10 speakers left.
  3. 3. Languages are not distributed evenly around the world, with some countries being home to a much greater number of languages than others. For example, Papua New Guinea has more than 850 languages spoken, while India has more than 400.
  4. 4. The loss of a language means more than just the disappearance of words; it also means the loss of cultural traditions, knowledge, and practices that are often passed down through language.
  5. 5. The theme for International Mother Language Day 2023 is “Language and Culture in the Digital Age”. This theme focuses on the role of technology in language preservation and how digital tools can be used to promote multilingualism.
  6. 6. The first International Mother Language Day was observed in 2000 to commemorate the language movement protests that occurred in Bangladesh in 1952. These protests sought to establish Bengali as an official language, as it was previously only recognized as a second language.
  7. 7. The UNESCO Atlas of the World’s Languages in Danger lists more than 3,000 languages that are considered endangered.
  8. 8. Bilingualism and multilingualism have been linked to various cognitive and socio-cultural benefits, including improved communication skills, enhanced creativity, and increased cultural awareness.
  9. 9. The most widely spoken language in the world is Mandarin Chinese, with more than 1.1 billion speakers.
  10. 10. English is the third most spoken language in the world, with more than 1 billion speakers, after Mandarin Chinese and Spanish.

Our team of skilled language specialists is fluent in a wide range of languages, and we are committed to bridging the communication gap between individuals, businesses, and organizations, regardless of language barriers.

This day reminds us of the value of our mother tongues and the significant role they play in shaping our identity and cultural heritage. Let us continue to celebrate and embrace the diversity of languages that make our world a richer and more beautiful place.

If you need interpretation or translation services in any language, we are here to help. Contact us to learn more about our services and how we can assist you in connecting with individuals and communities from all over the world.

We are celebrating National Thesaurus Day!

When you’re looking for that perfect word to convey your thought, or don’t want to repeat the same word over and over again, where do you go? The thesaurus, of course!

Today we are celebrating National Thesaurus Day! As language specialists, we are very thankful to Peter Mark Roget that he created this wonderful book.

But the word thesaurus was first recorded in English as early as 1730, and it comes from the Greek thēsaurós, meaning “storehouse,” “treasure,” or “treasury.” So, we can think of a thesaurus as a “storehouse” or “treasure-trove” of knowledge (in the form of words).

Peter Roget started the book in 1848 and finished in 1852 with 15,000 words. The book’s full original title was “Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases Classified and Arranged so as to Facilitate the Expression of Ideas and Assist in Literary Composition.”

The word thesaurus was first recorded in English as early as 1730, and it comes from the Greek thēsaurós, meaning “storehouse,” “treasure,” or “treasury.” So, we can think of a thesaurus as a “storehouse” or “treasure-trove” of knowledge (in the form of words).

Our interpreters and translators love National Thesaurus Day, because:

  1. 1. It helps expand the vocabulary.
  2. Bigger vocabulary helps during translations and interpretations very much. You can easily find the equivalent in English for the message in the target language. Moreover, if you are working on texts it is always good to have several synonyms to make the lexical level of the text higher.
  1. 2. It helps avoid repetitions.
  2. 3. It helps to learn the meanings of new words by seeing what other words they are related to by comparison.
  3. 4. Compare the shades of meaning in words and pick up the best for the needed topic.

Language Services for Law Enforcement Organizations

This week started with National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.

This day is dedicated to recognizing and thanking everyone in law enforcement for their tireless work to keep communities safe. The local, state and federal jobs are often thankless and take officers away from their families for long hours or days. On January 9th and during this upcoming month we can thank Law Enforcement Officers for their service.

Homeland Language Services is always ready to support Police and Law Enforcement organizations. Our interpreting and translating services were designed especially for the requirements of police forces. Our team helps them to keep their services accessible to anybody no matter which native language they need. Interpreters are important for communication with victims, witnesses, and suspects. Meanwhile, translation services are needed for witness statements, court summons, victim support letters, or public information.

Currently, Homeland Language Services provides interpreting and translation services for the Sheriff and Police Departments in Ventura County, Santa Barbara County, and Los Angeles County. My experience helped me become stronger, and more focused and gave me the tools to be a better asset in Homeland Language Services. I am determined, with a strong sense of aid to others, and focused always on what is best for my peers, being my work colleagues or our clients.”

“Amazing facts you learn at the police: Companionship, experience, strength, honor.”

Jorge Lanazca, Homeland Language Services Key Account Manager:

“Having worked as an interpreter for law enforcement was truly great. It gave me the chance to serve my community and gave me the opportunity to travel. The knowledge and experience obtained through this line of work are very valuable. It’s a great feeling knowing that your work has a positive effect on the life of others.
